On Wednesday 10th September, the University Ethics Committee (UREC) held its first meeting of the 2014/2015 Academic year. This Committee, chaired by Professor Christopher Newman, contains representatives from across the Faculties and Professional services at the University; student representatives and lay members from the local community.
The Ethics Procedure at the University of Sheffield, while overseen by the UREC, is delegated to the University Departments as they have, by their nature, a greater understanding of the issues in the applications than a University wide committee. As such, the topics under discussion were not necessarily those which you would expect when the Ethics Committee is mentioned. Over the course of the meeting, the Committee examined the introduction of the University’s online ethics application; reviewed audit visits to departments, discussed future audit processes, explored ways of engaging the wider University community (through both traditional and digital media) and clarified the distinction in roles between the Scientific and Ethical review of research.
